Facelift Terminology
Facelift terminology can be complicated and confusing for patients. It really doesn’t need to be, however. The key to a properly performed facelift is to reposition the supportive tissues of the face in a way that restores more youthful contours and volume. This means that work is done under the skin to release and reposition those supportive tissues. The type of release and extent of deep dissection determines the name of the facelift, for example, deep plane lift, SMAS lift, or mini lift. I recognized over years of experience that the most important factor in successful facelift outcomes is to match the procedure performed with the needs of the patient.
How to Decide the Best Type of Facelift For You
In many cases adequate correction requires complete release of all major facial retaining ligaments while in others a more limited dissection may allow complete correction of the areas of concern. In some cases it is clear from the pre-operative evaluation what the needs will be, but equally often, the final decision about how to handle facial supportive tissues is best made at the time of surgery. This is why I developed the ProLIFT technique to precisely match the procedure performed with the needs of each individual patient.
ProLIFT Technique
Over the past 10 years the recognition of the importance of vertical vector lifting has resulted in a shift toward more aggressive release of facial retaining ligaments and more frequent use of the deep plane approach. Yet, this approach is not necessary for all patients and the ProLIFT approach remains the best option for most patients to have the benefits of the balance between maximal improvement and minimal dissection.
Natural Facelift Results
When properly performed with release, repositioning and anchoring of the deep supportive tissues of the face, the result is natural-looking, youthful contours without visible incisions. Results from these procedures last for years and may have a dramatic rejuvenating effect.
