Enhancing the jawline – what are the options?

Jawline has become one of the hottest items on the market for the aesthetic industry. There are several reasons patients desire a sharper, more defined jawline and there are even more procedures that can help achieve this. It is not always cut and dry and it could take several options placed together in order to achieve the goal the patient desires.

  1. HA Filler: HA fillers have long been used in the face in order to replace volume loss. Hyaluronic Acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the body, but as we age, we produce less and less, and start to lose what we have. There are several brands. Most commonly are the RHA collection, Juvéderm and Restylane. When it comes to jawline fillers, we can add volume to superficial and deep tissue in order to make this area more defined and noticeable. HA fillers are dissolvable in the event that the patient does not like the end result.
  2. Radiesse: Calcium hydroxylapatite, or Radiesse, is another type of filler that closer mimics bone. Due to its high G-Prime it is designed to give a more defined and dramatic definition to the areas in which it is placed. It replaces volume quicker than some of its lower G-Prime counterparts. Due to its components, Radiesse is not easily dissolved and therefore, presents a little more of an issue with first time filler clients.
  3. Ultherapy: This is a non-surgical deep tissue tightener that is designed to contour the jawline by tightening the underlying tissue of the neck and lower face in order to create a more defined and lifted neck and jaw. This procedure fixes the deep tissue sagging problem of aging. As we age our skin and the deep tissue begin to descend. This creates the illusion of a less defined jawline. With this procedure we can fix that by using ultrasound wave. The downtime is very minor due to target tissue being deeper than the outer skin. Some patients experience edema in the neck and lower face, but this resolves without one week.
  4. RF microneedling: The device for radio frequency microneedling that I have experience with is called Profound. This device creates collagen and elastin under the skin by using radiofrequency pulses and the insertion of small needles. It is directly targeting superficial skin. Profound, coupled with Ultherapy is a non-surgical facelift.
  5. Surgical Intervention: Some patients will choose surgical intervention. This is including, but is not limited to, a neck lift, facelift, and jawline and chin implants. It is important that, when considering these options, you meet with a facial plastic surgeon that understands anatomy. It is important to set expectation with these procedures. This is done through extensive consultation and planning. The downtime is different with every person and every procedure and would be discussed at your consultation.
