How does upper eyelid surgery improve the eyes?
Upper blepharoplasty targets drooping and sagging in the upper eyelids. You may have heard the procedure also called an eyelid lift. The goal is to remove the sagging in the lids and make the person’s eyes appear more open and alert. Sagging eyelids tend to make a person look perpetually sleepy and tired.
Sometimes the upper eyelids are drooping due to ptosis. This is weakening of the muscles that control the eyelid. Dr. Beaty often combines the aesthetic aspects of blepharoplasty with the functional repair needed for ptosis.
Who could benefit from upper eyelid surgery?
Most people over the age of 40 could benefit from this surgery, to some degree. That’s because the thin skin of the eyelids and their continual exposure to the elements makes them almost universally prone to sagging and drooping. If a person has hooding on the upper eyelid, this is an excellent procedure. Of course, this surgery can be necessary, rather than cosmetic, if the upper eyelid is drooping to the extent that it is beginning to impinge on the field of vision. If that is the case, insurance will usually cover this procedure.
This surgery can take up to a decade off of the patient’s facial age. It makes the person look more alert. Plus, the results are subtle in that most people (unless you tell them) have no idea that you have had surgery. They only know you look somehow younger and more refreshed.
