Friends and needling go together like the Braves and chewing tobacco. The back and forth banter is a part of any close relationship.
At Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery, we like another sort of needling, microneedling. Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation procedure that puts 12 tiny needles to work improving your skin. It’s an easy-to-take procedure that really improves your skin.
How does microneedling work?
The concept behind microneedling is to initiate a “wound healing” response in the body. When the skin is injured the body rapidly gets to work repairing it. You may think of platelets and their job in healing a true wound, but another part of the process is the delivery of new supplies of collagen and elastin to the wound site. Collagen is responsible for providing the skin’s underlying support system, keeping the skin firm and tight. Elastin makes the skin supple and pliable. All of this not only heals the skin, but it rejuvenates it.
OK, so how do you trigger a wound response? At Dr. Beaty’s, we do so with 12 tiny needles that are located in the tip of the Rejuvapen microneedling pen. When moved over the target area, the needles move up and down, creating microscopic holes/channels down into the skin. These heal in just a few hours, but the body perceives them as injuries and elevates collagen and elastin production in the area to compensate.
This has two benefits. First, it stimulates the healing response, which elevates collagen and elastin production for weeks. Second, these short-lived channels down into the skin are great for the application of topical gels and creams to penetrate below the surface of the skin. We can also apply platelet-rich plasma after microneedling.
What do we treat with microneedling?
- Fine lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead
- Crepe-like texture across the face can be firmed
- Coarse, sun-damaged skin
- Acne, burn, and surgical scars
- Stretch marks
- Overly large pores
We use a topical numbing cream prior to your treatment, so you feel no pain. And your recovery is minimal.
