Dissolving Fillers

What is Filler?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have gained popularity for enhancing facial aesthetics due to their reliable outcomes and long-term stability. They effectively improve facial contours affected by volume loss or irregularities. However, there are instances where fillers may be misplaced, irregular, or not meet a patient’s expectations. Fortunately, hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved, restoring the previous facial contour.

Process of Dissolving HA Fillers

Hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the skin, is introduced into the dermal or subdermal layers to enhance volume as a filler. These fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. If you wish to dissolve HA filler, your doctor will identify the specific areas requiring treatment. In my practice, I ensure patient comfort by first numbing the skin with a topical cream. Although the injections for dissolving filler may cause slight discomfort due to the chemical reaction between the enzyme and filler, there is typically minimal swelling and no bruising. Patients can resume normal activities immediately after treatment without downtime.

Results and Follow-Up

The reduction in filler volume is noticeable over about two weeks, after which a re-evaluation will determine if further treatment is necessary for full correction. The process is generally well-tolerated and effective, though the ease of dissolution can vary among different HA fillers. Expert injectors consider this characteristic when selecting fillers, especially for sensitive areas like the tear troughs, where more difficult-to-dissolve fillers should be avoided.
