If you follow the aesthetic world (as you probably do if you’re here rooting about in Dr. Beaty’s blog), you know there are two treatment areas that have been exploding over the last couple of years — microneedling and radiofrequency treatments for skin rejuvenation.
At Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery, we thought we go those separate treatments one better by combining them into a single treatment called Profound. Dr. Beaty was the first practice in the Atlanta area to offer this innovative skin rejuvenation treatment.
What is Profound?
Profound is a completely non-invasive treatment. It’s a nonsurgical alternative for treating facial wrinkles and the appearance of cellulite. It combines radiofrequency (RF) energy with microneedling to renew your skin from within. Microneedling and RF energy delivery treatments both work through the body’s healing mechanisms for remodeling existing collagen and creating new collagen and elastin. But when you combine the two, Profound stimulates natural production increases of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid to revitalize the skin and build new, healthy tissue.
What happens in a Profound treatment session?
Prior to your session, we first apply topical numbing cream across the treatment areas. This ensures you’ll remain comfortable during the 45 minutes or so it takes for a Profound treatment. We move the Profound handpiece across the area being treated. The microneedles in the handpiece oscillate up and down, penetrating the epidermis down into the dermis beneath. When the needles reach their set depth, the needle tips emit a burst of radiofrequency energy directly into the dermis. This is the key to Profound; the RF energy doesn’t have to penetrate the epidermis. That means higher levels of energy can be delivered into the dermis than would be possible without the microneedling, as you could damage the outer skin.
What can Profound treat?
As a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Beaty knows surgical facelifts. But he is impressed by the results we can get non-surgically with Profound. This treatment aims to provide many of the same benefits and results as a surgical facelift. Of course, it’s silly to say you can get the same level of rejuvenation as with a facelift, but Profound delivers impressive skin tightening across the face and jowls. We also use it on other areas known for saggy skin, such as the upper arms, the décolleté, skin above the knees, and even on the abdomen.
The key to Profound is that it delivers its RF energy directly into the dermis, the skin’s second layer. There it stimulates the body to initiate a healing response, where new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid are produced and sent to the area. These combine to tighten and firm the skin, akin to what a facelift does.
For cellulite, the same increases triggered by the RF microneedling dramatically decrease the appearance of cellulite in a single treatment.
