What Is Skin Resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing includes a range of procedures that are used to rejuvenate aging skin and eliminate lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and pigment irregularities.

At Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery, we use both CO2 laser and Erbium YAG laser technologies depending on the needs of the patient and desired downtime.

Laser light energy interacts with water in skin cells, creating a controlled ablation of damaged skin. This also stimulates the formation of new collagen and elastin as the skin heals. Your lines and wrinkles gradually fade as the healing process continues.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing works best for people who want to tighten and tone their skin using the body’s natural healing and collagen production processes. This option may be ideal for patients who are noticing skin laxity, lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, pigment irregularities, or sun damage.

Our office also offers other resurfacing options, such as radiofrequency and chemical peels, which may be better suited for certain concerns. During your consultation, your provider will help determine whether laser resurfacing—or another resurfacing procedure—is the best match for your skin and goals.

What Can Laser Skin Resurfacing Treat?

Laser skin resurfacing procedures at Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery are used to improve a number of concerns. These include:

  • Rhytids (facial lines)
  • Wrinkles
  • Skin laxity
  • Acne scarring
  • Pigmentation irregularities
  • Sun Damage

Candidates may need between 1 and 4 treatments depending on the specific type of laser or device used and the depth of the treatment. Our providers create individualized treatment plans to help patients reach their skin resurfacing goals.

What Are My Laser Skin Resurfacing Options?

CO2 Laser

CO2 laser resurfacing uses focused beams of light to precisely remove thin layers of skin. It is especially effective for deeper wrinkles, more significant sun damage, and advanced textural irregularities. While this option may involve slightly more downtime, it can deliver dramatic, long-lasting improvement.

Erbium YAG Laser

Erbium YAG laser resurfacing is often chosen for patients with mild to moderate wrinkles, sun spots, and pigmentation concerns. It removes more superficial layers of skin compared to CO2, which allows for a gentler treatment and faster recovery time. Many patients appreciate that it achieves smoother, more even skin tone with less downtime.

What Does the Laser Resurfacing Procedure Involve?

During the laser resurfacing procedure, our provider uses FDA-approved CO2 or Erbium YAG lasers to target varying depths of the skin depending on your needs and desired downtime. After treatment, a soothing ointment is applied and you’ll receive detailed instructions for caring for the skin as it heals over the next 3 to 7 days.

We use topical numbing medication and/or nerve blocks to prevent discomfort during the procedure. Some patients elect to take oral medications for pain reduction and relaxation during the procedure, which typically takes 30-45 minutes.

Four days ago I completed by third session with Dr. Laura Beaty and could not be more pleased with my results. I had a full face Erbium Laser Resurfacing. The procedure was for both preventive and cosmetic reasons.

The entire team at Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery is professional and well informed. I highly recommend Dr. Laura Beaty. You will not find anyone better than Laura Beaty for all you healthcare and skin care needs.

Are There Side Effects to Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing results in the removal of parts of the upper layer of skin. Because of this, we are able to stimulate the healing response which creates new collagen and reduces lines and wrinkles. Depending on the treatment performed, our provider will prescribe a specific skin care regimen for the first 4 to 10 days of healing. During this time, exercise will be limited to prevent sweating on the healing skin. Discomfort is generally minimal and well-controlled with over-the-counter medicines.

When Will I See My Laser Skin Resurfacing Results?*

Improvement in lines, wrinkles and skin tone should be apparent immediately. These results will continue to progress for up to a year as the healing process and collagen production continue. Improvement in pigment irregularity is seen immediately after treatment. With proper skin care and sun protection, the benefits of laser skin resurfacing can be long-lasting.*

*Individual results may vary!

What Procedures Can Complement Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Many patients choose to combine laser skin resurfacing with other treatments for a more comprehensive rejuvenation. Options may include:

  • Injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers to smooth wrinkles and restore facial volume
  • Chemical peels for additional improvement in skin tone and texture
  • Radiofrequency treatments to further tighten and firm the skin
  • Facial plastic surgery procedures such as eyelid surgery or a facelift for patients seeking more dramatic results

Your provider will recommend a personalized treatment plan based on your goals, skin condition, and desired recovery time.

Our providers specialize in non-surgical procedures, facial plastic surgery options and more.
