Many people may not realize that youthful skin has an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA); however, factors like age, sunlight, and more can decrease the amount of HA in your skin. It is this reduction in HA that can lead to a loss of skin structure and volume, creating unwanted lines, wrinkles and other folds on the face. Dermal facial fillers like JUVÉDERM® offer a safe, effective way to replace that HA, increasing your skin’s volume and smoothing the skin’s surface to give your skin a more youthful appearance.
What is Juvéderm?
JUVÉDERM® is a smooth, gel dermal facial filler that works to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines around your mouth and nose. Juvéderm filler has been widely used for many years. Each Juvéderm filler is based on hyaluronic acid, a substance that the body makes naturally. From this base, varying products are made to reach a specific density. These variations accommodate the differences in tissue across the face. For example, the tissue around the lips and eyes is delicate and in need of a softer, smoother filler than is the tissue on the cheeks or around the nose and mouth.
What types of Juvéderm fillers are offered at Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery?
Juvéderm has a comprehensive product line that meets a variety of cosmetic needs. Commonly used fillers include:
- Ultra XC, for the correction of mild to moderate lines and creases
- Ultra Plus, for the correction of moderate to severe lines and creases
- Voluma, to add volume to the mid-face
- Volbella, ultra-fine filler for lip enhancement
- Vollure, for the flexible correction of nasolabial folds
Who can receive Juvéderm injections?
Juvéderm treatment is frequently sought by adults interested in correcting the signs of aging. Most people can receive this dermal filler without incident because hyaluronic acid already exists in the body. Therefore, adverse reaction is highly unlikely.
What areas can be treated with Juvéderm?
Any area of the face in which the signs of aging have occurred may be treated with an appropriate Juvéderm produce. This line of products is commonly used to correct:
- Nasolabial folds around the nose and mouth
- Creases between the mouth and the chin
- Undereye bags and dark circles
- Minor bumps on the bridge of the nose
- Cheek deflation
- Thin and deflated lips
- Non-prominent chin or jawline

How often can I receive filler injections?
Filler injections can be safely repeated as hyaluronic acid is metabolized and the signs of aging return. In some cases, repeat treatment may be performed to enhance the results of treatment such as lip augmentation. However, treatment should be conducted with care, by an experienced injector, to avoid an overfilled appearance.
Juvederm Lip Filler Before & After
How long does Juvéderm last?
Over time, the body naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid that is introduced via fillers. The time in which this happens depends on the density of the product. Generally, patients can expect:
- Juvéderm Ultra to last for 4 to 6 months
- Ultra Plus to last for 6 to 9 months
- Volbella to last approximately 12 months
- Vollure to last up to 18 months
- Voluma to last up to 24 months
How does Juvéderm compare to other fillers?
Juvéderm is one of the most longstanding families of fillers known today. Some other fillers are also made with hyaluronic acid so work in the same way as Juvéderm products. Other fillers are formulated with microspheres that add structure and stimulate collagen production for ongoing tissue regeneration. All fillers have certain advantages and potential disadvantages. Our expert injectors provide information regarding suitable products during your consultation so you can make the most confident and educated decision.
Are Juvéderm injections painful?
Juvéderm treatment takes less than 20 minutes. Products contain a mild anesthetic to reduce discomfort following the procedure. Using a fine needle, Dr. Beaty will ease the JUVÉDERM® facial filler underneath the innermost layer of your skin to add volume and smooth the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and facial folds. Most patients find the treatment very tolerable.
Will there be swelling after filler injections?
Slight swelling is a common side effect of dermal filler treatment. Swelling is typically localized around the injection points and is barely noticeable. To reduce this side effect, patients may gently apply ice for a few hours.
Are there any risks to Juvéderm filler?
Dermal filler treatment is very low risk. Hyaluronic acid is a non-irritating substance to which no allergy or adverse reaction is expected. While filler products themselves are very safe and effective, it remains important that treatment is conducted by a trained, licensed professional. Poor injection technique could result in overfilling, infection and other complications.
What makes JUVÉDERM® different from other facial fillers and injectables?
JUVÉDERM® is uniquely formulated through a process known as Hylacross™ technology, giving it a special, long-lasting smooth-gel structure. This makes JUVÉDERM® the first smooth-consistency HA gel and the only HA filler that has been approved by the FDA.
How does Juvéderm compare to Botox?
Juvéderm and other dermal fillers are used to smooth lines and creases on the lower face. Hyaluronic acid is also ideal for filling in the cheeks and lips. These are all signs of aging that relate to the loss of elasticity in the skin. Botox, on the other hand, is a neuromodulator. This cosmetic drug reduces wrinkles that are caused by muscle movements. The differing effects of Botox and Juvéderm make them complementary for full-face rejuvenation.
