Wrinkle reduction is a common objective among many patients who visit our Atlanta and Alpharetta offices. For over a decade, Botox has been the most familiar treatment for dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet and frown lines. Now, patients have an alternative to consider. We are proud to offer Jeuveau™, a neuromodulator developed solely for the cosmetic improvement of common signs of aging.
What is Jeuveau™?
Jeuveau™ is a neurotoxin medication that gained FDA approval in the Spring of 2019. This cosmetic drug was developed for the correction of glabellar lines by reducing muscle contractions with a prabotulinumtoxinA. Jeuveau™ contains a full 900 kDa purified botulinum toxin type A for safe, effective results.
To gain FDA approval, this drug was studied in over 2,100 people. Its use was approved based on safety and efficacy performance in two individual Phase III, multi-center, placebo-controlled, double-blind randomized trials. In each, the designated primary endpoint was met. At the conclusion of clinical trials, approximately 70% of study participants noted a visible reduction in dynamic wrinkles one month after injectable treatment with Jeuveau™.
How does Jeuveau™ work?
Jeuveau™ is a botulinum toxin that works similarly to Botox. The product is administered into the muscle, where purified botulinum particles connect to neuroreceptors. As a result, a vital chemical involved in muscle contractions cannot be released, and muscles enter a smooth, relaxed state. Like Botox, Jeuveau™ interrupts brain synapses that facilitate contractions in targeted muscles for a period of a few months.
Candidates for Jeuveau™
Jeuveau™ cosmetic injectables may be an ideal treatment option for most adults who are interested in reducing signs of aging such as frown lines. The exceptions are individuals who have had an adverse reaction to Botox or other neuromodulators and women who are pregnant or nursing. We conduct a brief consultation and health history with our patients to confirm that Jeuveau™ may be a good treatment option for their needs.
Jeuveau™ Treatment Areas
FDA-approval for Jeuveau™ allows treatment for the correction of frown lines. However, as happened with Botox, we expect usage to expand quickly as providers become familiar with the effects of this drug.
Jeuveau™ vs. Botox
Clinical trials of Jeuveau™ have included a comparison to Botox. According to reports, performance is quite similar between the two.
- Both neuromodulators interrupt nerve synapses that cause movement in a particular group of muscles.
- Results of each last an average of 3 months.
- Jeuveau™ has demonstrated a similar safety and efficacy record as Botox.
- The use of Jeuveau™ has recently begun. As this continues, we expect for much more comparable data to emerge.
Is Jeuveau™ better than Botox?
Botox has met a few competitors before Jeuveau™ was developed. Each neuromodulator offers something just a bit different than others. Because every patient may have unique needs and treatment objectives, it is difficult to say that any product is better than another across the board. What we can say is that Jeuveau™ has performed exceedingly well thus far and that we are pleased to have an additional option to offer our patients.
Why should I choose Jeuveau™ over other neuromodulators?
The primary difference that studies have found between Jeuveau™ and other neuromodulators is cost. However, this can vary across the country. To determine which treatment is best for any patient, we take several factors into account. The most appropriate treatment option is the one that meets cosmetic, longevity, and cost expectations.
Can I have Jeuveau™ if I have previously had Botox, Dysport or Xeomin?
One of the advantages of this category of drugs is that they are all similar; they are all neuromodulators that work in the same manner. In clinical studies, researchers discovered that Jeuveau™ is most like Botox. Therefore, patients who have previously been treated with Botox should have no problem transitioning to Jeuveau™. Furthermore, if so desired, one can try Jeuveau™ after other neuromodulator treatment and then switch back again. What matters most in such instances is the timing of treatments and the reaction to individual drugs. As mentioned, if you have had an adverse reaction to one neuromodulator, chances are you will have the same reaction to any other.
Do Jeuveau™ injections hurt?
Injectable treatments are generally very comfortable. Patients tend to report feeling only a mild sting from the tiny needle. Jeuveau™ does not contain additional anesthetic ingredients. However, if you are concerned about discomfort, speak with our staff. A topical numbing cream or ice may be applied before injections are administered to make your treatment completely stress free.
Can I return to daily activity immediately after treatment?
Injectables are often referred to as lunchtime treatments because they generally incur little to no side effects. You may return to work or other light activities immediately after Jeuveau™ treatment. Exercise or activities that increase your heart rate over 100 beats per minute could lead to more extensive redness and swelling, so should be postponed until the day after treatment.
Can I have Jeuveau™ and filler at the same time?
Neuromodulators and dermal fillers make a great pair! Many patients choose to combine these treatments to address dynamic wrinkles as well as cosmetic concerns such as thin or deflated lips or creases caused by volume loss.
