Veins

Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery treats spider veins using concentrated light energy to shrink unwanted veins without harming surrounding tissue.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider Veins (not to be confused with varicose veins) are small blood vessels that usually resemble spider webs. They can be red, blue, or purple in color. These veins typically appear on the legs or face. An individual’s likelihood of developing spider veins can be affected by a number of different factors, including:

  • Genetics
  • Occupation
  • Weight

Candidates for Laser Vein Treatment

If you’re experiencing aesthetic concerns like the ones listed below, laser vein treatment could help:

  • Spider veins – Pink, purple or red veins that are small and superficial.
  • Feeder veins or reticular veins – Blue or greenish veins that are slightly deeper but still near the skin’s surface.

How are Lasers used to treat Spider Veins?

Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery treats spider veins using concentrated light energy to shrink unwanted veins without harming surrounding tissue. The laser is aimed at the problem vein. This laser energy is then absorbed by the vein as heat, eventually causing it to collapse in on itself.

How many Vein Removal treatments are needed to see results?*

This will vary on a case by case basis. Usually, 4+ treatments are needed to remove a spider vein entirely. After treatment for leg veins we recommend a compression garment and limitation of exercise for 10 days to achieve best results.

What Happens if Spider Veins are Left Untreated?

Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins. However, both are indications of chronic venous insufficiency. This condition involves a lack of strength in the small valves in veins. The valves are responsible for preventing blood from moving backward in the vein. If you see spider veins, you're seeing tiny veins that result when valves are not closing after blood pushes through. The visible veins show where blood is pooling. The bad news about spider veins is that, because they are linked to chronic venous insufficiency, they will not go away without treatment, and new ones may develop over time. The good news about spider veins is that,  unlike varicose veins, treatment is primarily performed to improve appearance. Untreated spider veins typically do not get worse to the point of creating a medical concern. Their progression may present cosmetic concerns, at which point easy treatments can be arranged.

Will My Spider Veins Go Away On Their Own?

No. Spider veins do not go away on their own. This is because the valves in the veins cannot be strengthened to stop allowing blood to move against the natural flow back toward the heart. While healthy lifestyle habits will not eliminate existing spider veins, developing new practices may help you support healthier veins going forward. The best way to prevent new spider veins (and varicose veins) from developing is to engage in some type of physical activity every day. If you sit for several hours a day, make it a practice to get up and walk around every 60 to 90 minutes. Experts also suggest taking 30-plus-minute walks every day. Working the legs by walking, hiking, biking, and strength training engages the calf muscles, which press against the leg veins to help move blood efficiently out of the lower extremities.

How Long Does a Treatment Session Last?

Laser treatment for spider veins is quick and convenient. Depending on the number of veins targeted, a session may last from 15 minutes to an hour. Smaller veins typically require much less time than larger veins, so your spider vein treatment is something you can do during your lunch hour.

Are There Any At-Home Treatments for Spider Veins?

Many people like the idea of trying natural remedies for spider veins before seeking medical intervention.

Natural remedies may not be as effective or as safe for treating spider veins as one may assume. Some oral supplements may interact with other medications, so this remedy should be approached with extreme caution. The more direct issue with natural remedies for spider veins is that they aren't widely studied, so there is little if any clinical data to convince us of their efficacy. If you have spider veins and you want them gone, professional treatment is the most advantageous approach.

What Treatment Options Are There for Spider Veins?

Spider vein treatments have been proven safe and effective through years of clinical study and observation. One way to treat spider veins is through a procedure called sclerotherapy. This injectable treatment inserts a mild irritant into the affected veins. The irritant causes the veins to collapse, after which they are absorbed by the body. At Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery, we perform laser treatments and/or sclerotherapy with Asclera on unattractive spider veins. Laser treatments work by heating up the internal walls of the targeted veins. The controlled heat affects the veins without harming the skin or surrounding structures. Asclera sclerotherapy works by injecting a chemical into the vein which results in collapse of the veins. Small spider veins may begin to disappear very soon after the very first treatment.
