Blepharoplasty for Men
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery gets rid of excess fat, skin, and muscle from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Eyelid surgery improves the appearance of wrinkles, dark circles, puffy eyes, upper lid drooping, and eye hooding.
How are the eyelids affected by aging?
As men age, the skin progressively loses its elasticity. The loss of elasticity combined with the constant pull from gravity leads excess skin to collect around the lids and cause upper eyelid drooping and the bulging of the lower eyelids. When this happens, men could look “tired” or “angry.”
Who Is the Ideal Candidate for Male Blepharoplasty?
Men who are physically healthy and 30 years or older with the desire to improve aging skin in the eye area would benefit from eyelid surgery. Patients should also have reasonable expectations and healthy facial muscles and tissue. Those with serious eye problems, active diseases, or pre-existing medical conditions should refrain from blepharoplasty.
What to Expect During Blepharoplasty Treatment
Dr. Beaty will meet with you during a consultation to discuss whether upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or a surgery for both lids will provide you with optimal results. Here are some details on the upper eyelid and lower eyelid procedures:
Upper Eyelid Surgery
First, an incision will be inserted in the natural crease of the upper eyelid in order to remain hidden when the eyes are open. Next, any excess skin or fat will be removed. Due to the strategic placement of the incision, signs of the procedure will not be existent once a patient has fully healed.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
To eliminate excess skin from the lower eyelid, Dr. Beaty will place an incision right below the lower lash line. An incision hidden on the inside of the lower eyelid or a trans-conjunctival incision is an alternative way to remove excess fat and improve puffiness in the lower lids.
A double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Beaty generally completes the outpatient blepharoplasty procedure in one to two hours in our Alpharetta facility.
When Do Patients Start to Notice Blepharoplasty Results?
It typically takes several weeks for men to start to notice results from eyelid surgery. While a blepharoplasty procedure does not stop the process of aging, the results last a long time. Patients who opt for upper eyelid surgery may need to repeat the procedure after 10-20 years while lower eyelid surgery patients enjoy permanent results.
How Does the Recovery Process Work?
Recovery time is minimal because both lower and upper eyelid surgeries are not very invasive. Following a blepharoplasty treatment, gauze will be loosely placed over the patient’s eyes. Dr. Beaty may also apply a lubricating ointment or cold compresses to the affected area. Swelling, bruising, irritation, or dry eyes may occur but symptoms will fade within a week or two after the surgery.
In order to keep the eyelids moist throughout recovery, Dr. Beaty will prescribe ointments and eye drops. Patients can resume to normal activities two weeks following the surgery.
Is Eyelid Surgery Covered By Insurance?
Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery does not accept insurance for eyelid surgery.
